"Koi ponds can be amazing, the koi themselves are enchanting, you can have a minimum matinence pond easily" Koi are beautiful fish and don't require a lot of care, if you set your pond up correctly the first time.

When starting to build a pond you need to think about location. Do you want to here the waterfall from your room at night? Do you want to see it from a window? How close are the existing plants and trees, what kind are they?

Some times we start with a location under a large tree, or plant a tree near our pond. We need to be careful that if the tree looses its leaves or drops pine needles that we can deal with the consequences. Some leaves and needles are piosonous to koi, and can clog water ways and filters.

The area where you live needs to be taken into account also, for colder or hotter weather  the pond needs to be deeper. The fact is, koi will die if they freeze, goldfish seem to be fine, so if you experience extreme cold weather or long cold winters you should plan on making you pond at least 3 feet deep.

For hot weather the oxygen can get very low, making the pond deeper makes more water to heat up and helps to keep the oxygen level higher.

Spray away works like a charm and really dose its job, Love it

You can add aeration, make a larger waterfall, for more circulation, or make a deeper pond. We have a stream on ours, it doesn't help in the winter because this cools the water, but it does add more aeration in the warm months and it's very beautiful.

What's a pond without a waterfall! Waterfalls are not just for looks they create sound and aeration in the water, the koi enjoy the fast running water and use it to hide in.

Koi are easy fish to have in a pond provided that you build your pond with the idea that you will be housing your pet fish. Koi have many predators, raccoons, birds, and even house cats. But you can alleviate most of these problems by building your pond at least 12 inches deep and giving the fish some areas of cover.

Plants on the edges, or in your pond offer shelter, there are a lot of plants that grow out over the water and offer shelter. Shelters can be made by placing brick of concrete down in the bottom of the pond and arranging them to form a hideaway. Koi will use these at any sign of danger.

Koi are desired for their beauty and when this kind of material is in the pond they tend to skin the cut themselves up. So use extreme caution with the shelter you build and make sure the shelter is large enough for your largest koi.
